Made Glorious – The March Violets – Into the Sun (Ha Ha Crow Baby)

Finally, Pop Pickers, the March Violets’ first proper album is available for non-Pledgers and other deviant slackers to buy.

A digital download has been made available here.

From the Violets’web site:

We have NO copies left of the Limited First Edition 2 CD version of the album. We won’t be making any more of this Special 2 CD bonus disc version. It is now a collectors item.

HOWEVER You can order a digital copy of the new album by using the Bandcamp link below. It is Paypal, but you do not need a Paypal account to order, credit and debit cards work very well and securely.

Glad I got a few copies of the double album, and Byakhee Richard got one as a present.

The Rebel Colonists, and I know a few of you visit this blog (my sad techie webmaster side kicks in), are also lucky enough to have the pleasure of a March Violets Tour:

The web sites have more info.

The front cover of the Crow Baby 12″ single. Now that was something to come home to. 🙂

Hang on…

Err did they say they might play a new song ?

Play Loud, Play Purple.

Loud, Proud & Purple

I’d got some e-mails from Si of the ‘Violets saying my pledge items had been posted, but by 12.30 today I’d given up hope Royal Mail would deliver them this w/e…but the postie turned up late with a box of goodies…

Yup, I’d splashed out on the bigger options:

  • Double pack CD, with the extra remixes (more of which later)
  • t-shirts, well who could say no to a jaw dropping culty t-shirt* ?
  • poster, my picture and name amongst the other people who funded this adventure (stroke my ego)
  • booklet, lots of pictures and all the lyrics, why not ?
  • badges
  • signed note

A full list of the remixes is here. Any band that writes a Happy Birthday song for the son of one of their fans has to be respected – and yes it is in typical ‘Violets style. That’s not the only new track either, and several remixes have extra lyrics.

The booklet…well Si has obviously spent a lot of time on this one. We are treated to all the lyrics, a page for each of the band members (Si, Tom, Rosie and Jo) along with lots of photos and even a painting of Rosie in full on vamp mode (and I must say I like that…dribble). Rosie also fills her page with poetry, alluding to March Violets tracks. Tom has his guitar geek page, and Jo her cat page.

Oh, and best of all the text refers to a video of Billion 3. Looking forward to that.

The Remixes

Immerse yourself in a film sound track set in a strange punk/goth/disco/dance/rave you can only leave by taking exits from the labyrinth that lead to psychedelic hammer horror films/twilight zone of a dystopian world of environmental, financial and sexual collapse.

The album as originally mixed was not a gothic dirge, the remixes are, well, hatstand. Regardless of the style, its the ‘Violets.

The extra lyrics and vocals on several tracks are really fitting and make the tracks really good. Given the originals are pretty stonkingly good that’s a hard thing to achieve.

What did you want time running backwards ?

* And no the cats couldn’t…they spent much of the afternoon curled up hard asleep on the t-shirts even before I’d worn them.

The March Violets: Made Glorious Tour 2013

Those little scamps the March Violets have announced some gigs.

The March Violets Tour 2013

Hike on over to here to find the dates…which are subject to, er, updates…

The Palace of Curiosities

Rosie Garland, female vocalist of one of my favourite bands (The March Violets) has had her first novel published:

I bought the book, as given the lyrics of the ‘Violets it was probably a good bet, and also because Rosie has had several anthologies of poems and short stories published before.

It sat on an occasional table for a week looking reproachfully at me, until the hot weather arrived and I melted and could do nothing but read.

Its a good read, a Victorian kaleidoscope of the vaudevillian underbelly of the late nineteenth century, replete with grotesques and freaks.

Rosie Garland

However, they are portrayed with all their human desires and frailties which I liked.

Rosie has certainly used her erudite repartee formed as an onstage performer to help build the text of this book. Though the middle is a bit slow, it does build up the overall decay of the troupe towards the end of the book.

The paperbook is out in the Autumn.

Well worth reading if you like weird Victoriana.

Here’s the author on full on mode….

It’s educational….

For the over 18’s only please…

Wanking is forever

The March Violets – Sold to the Devil

Purple Pledgers got the download of The March Violets new double album Made Glorious today.

If you want to listen to a stereotypical Gothic dirge, you’ll be disappointed. Oh dear, poor petals…

If you want to listen to a musically and lyrically diverse album with a gothic punk vein on a massive load of dance disco stimulants then you’ll be very happy. Pirates everywhere will be happy.

The Psycho Killer lives next door,
Washes the car,
Mows the lawn,
And takes the dog out for a walk.
(It’s nothing personal)

Indeed, if you want to listen to a gothic pirate sea shanty then Ramming Speed is for you !

When I was the size of a bottle of rum,
I was sold to the devil,
By my evil old Mum!

Sold for the price of a barrel of gin,
A hand full of ‘baccy
And a silver pin…

This is a really great album from a really great band, not some plodding retro luke warm dish re-tread. This is off-beat manic stuff. Its not an “easy” album to listen to by any means, but it is a keeper. The March Violets always came out with real odd stuff like “Long Pig” and “Bon Bon Babies” and this album continues this theme. I can see where they get some of their inspirations.

The tracks relased on the previous EPs also receive a lot of re-working – some subtle like on London’s Drowning, but more radical changes like on We Are All Gods which mixes the live version with an almost EBM crunching drum machine and synth.

I’m looking forward to the remixes as well – oh dear another Purple Pledger exclusive…

A Party – listening to a New Album

For the good boys and girls (and everyone in between), the new March Violets album (Made Glorious) should be played this Sunday (7th April) for all the Purple Pledgers, with live commentary/interaction with the band members.

An idea that we had was to have a kind of listening party where we (the band members and you) could all simultaneously listen to the new Album and chat about it online.

In the meantime, all the rest of you, will have to make do with existing stuff. Sometimes kick starter stuf is really rewarding. get behind your band, sculptor or favoured company and put your money where your mouth is please !

Some idea of what these peeps are like…

Made Glorious, the March Violets

As per my previous Snippet, the tracks on the album (Made Glorious) will have been remixed, so the EPs (good as they are) will have different versions to the album tracks.

There are slightly different mixes of most tracks, We Are All Gods III is very different. I really wanted to put them on, they are part of the original intent.
Teasing? There is one absolutely stonking Remix by Skin Job which will most certainly become a dance floor filler. Guess which track?

Guess us Pledgers will find out soon…

…because we are expecting an early listen to the entire album this month.

Good job I pledged.

New page for some of the ruins Gav A and I fought over yesterday.

I’ll be cycling through all the scenery items I have over the coming months so everything is covered.

One for the Pop Pickers:

An update on The March Violets’ album indicates that they’ve been remixing/re-recording some of the tracks from the previous EPs:

…have just completed the reworked version of London’s Drowning for the album, more guitars and even some real wave sounds for that watery feel!

So don’t assume if you own the EPs, the tracks on the album will be the same.

The March Violets: Made Glorious

Important news:

Album Tracklist goes up. Literally.
OK, have finally finalised the running order for the Album. Finally.

We wanted to have a definitive list that we wouldn’t have to change for vinyl. I’m a bit old school about Albums, I like it to play as the artist intended and don’t want to jump about or listen to ‘bonus tracks’ stuck on the end of a classic Album. Luckily modern playlisting allows those of you who like to pick and mix to listen how you like. Win Win.

It gets better… as this Album has gradually mutated into what will have to be a double LP if it gets on to vinyl, I have added another track to make sense of the timing per side. We are now up to 16, Hurrah!

For those of you who asked, here is the tracklist.

I’d speculated with Byakhee Tom what would be on the listing, and I’m pleased to say we were wrong and there’s loads of new Violet goodies…

Si

So no, the previous two EPs only contribute a few tracks to the new album each so you still need to go out and acquire them, YAY, good job I was someone who pledged some money to this project and got the LE Trinity EP signed by the band (he said preening his ego).
Now get off your arses and buy the album when it comes out.

I am reliably informed by the band, that there will be live gigs later in the year as well.

Having been to a March Violets gig, I would suggest going, as they are ace…
