WHFB: Dark Elves cause Carnage – Conclusion

Gav called it a day at about 9.30pm, so we’d actually been playing for about 8 hours and still only managed 3 turns.

We surveyed the scene:

  • Several of his key units such as the Black Orcs were gone.
  • He had lost his General and BSB.
  • Half of his Shaman had also been lost.
  • All three of his Cavalry units were gone, along with his trolls.
  • I had smashed the centre of his line, and still had all my key units intact.
  • The dice were really against him in every single phase.
  • I had had a lot of luck, bar a few failed Stupidity tests.
  • I now dominated the magic phase by quite some way – Blade Wind is a really horrible spell to use against Orcs & Goblins in their massed rank units.
  • His remaining units were scattered (and leaderless(), whereas mine were relatively still concentrated.
  • He had little that could take down the remaining Hydra and Eric, and nothing that could stop the CoK units.

Gav concluded that most of his army had been trashed even before the real hard units of mine had engaged properly.

Still at least we’d had some nice pizza and an Indian take out and had an enjoyable day. 🙂

WHFB: Dark Elves cause Carnage – Part 2

So at the end of turn one, we’d had a lot of combat and it was pretty close, probably just in my favour.

I charged my Silver Talons and Breathy the Hydra into Eega Ugezod’s Black Orcs, and also launched a Blade Wind attack beforehand to whittle down their numbers.

The wolf riders got a flank attack from a CoK Chariot. In fact, this game consisted of lots of flank attacks from units, which meant we rarely had the issue of numbers of ranks and associated steadfastness coming up.

The Spider Riders and Trolls got wiped out, and Spitty and Redark (Hunter in the dark) [cue twlight theme music for this very very scary name] my General followed up (Mengil’s couldn’t as they are reavers and spent time tearing up the corpses of their victims).

ASnd another one bites the dust, the Warlocks defeated the Wyvern and rider and moved on to another bolt thrower crew (all too easy).

Another flank attack, as Gav pushed the Orcs forward along with the Goblin horde !

End of turn 2, and its all a mess with so many units in combat. Great fun !

Well it was for me, as I had the Orcs for lunch, allowing my General to run them down, and Spitty turned to face the goblins.

The Orc Arrer boys did however over-run the Shades, but ended up pursuing them into the realms of nowhere they could do anything useful for the game as my CoK cavalry bypassed them. As I had no static units they didn’t get back into the game.

Gav’s right flank were similarly out of the game, having spent a couple of turns squabbling and then trying to move towards the middle of the battlefield.

the Night Goblin bowmen rounded the ruins, released the fanatics, who failed to make contact with my one unit of 10 RXBs and again were effectivelly out of the game.

The Orc Arrer Boyz (second unit) finally got into a scrap with the Spearmen, but Faygin Cheapsoul (my bargain basement hero with SFA) saw them off, moments after the goblin horde had received its own flank charge from Mengils who carved a path of destruction through them (again, unable to follow up).

WHFB: Dark Elves cause Carnage – Part 1

On Saturday, Byakhee Gavin A and I had a big game of WHFB – 5k per side – as he was able to game well into the evening as it was one of his respite days. A battle at 5k points value is quite large, so we were filling the entire table when deploying armies.

Of course the first thing I always have to do, is ensure his troops asre properly based. After 25+ years I am still doing this as he manages to find figures unbased or on the wrong bases.

Fixed !

I started out well, winning both the choice of table edge, then who did vanguard movement first, then who went first !

I deployed my scouts well forward.

Then the vanguard as far as I could forward – which resulted in me blocking Gav’s Wolf and Spider Riders being able to make a vanguard move.

Except, for the second set of Spider riders which moved into the middle of the table.

Entertainingly, Gav had put the Savage Orcs on the table, facing backwards – a prescient move as it turned out. he turned them round to face the enemy forces before we started. 🙂

My Dark Riders, were unable to resist temptation and charged them in the first turn.

And the second Dark Riders, and Warlocks also charged in the first turn – I have said previously that the rules for WHFB reward aggression, and that is doubled down in the DE rules. My army as a whole advanced rapidly.

The Warlocks broke the Savage Orcs much to my surprise, whilst the two sets of Dark Riders were held by the Wolf Riders (on the flank), and the Spider Riders in the centre.

Gavin then brought up his Trolls in a flank attack (there were a lot of these in this game, and we rarely had to worry about counting ranks in combat resolution).

His Lord on Wyvern moved in to support the beleagured Shaman and bolt thrower crew.

And his Orc Arrer Boyz flank attacked what remained of the Dark Riders – luckily I’d augmented them with Blades of Aiban so they were doing ok, but…

The Dark Riders were wiped out, and the Trolls and Spider Riders followed up into Spitty the Hydra, and Mengil Manhides’ troops, which was a mistake on their behalf.

Whilst the other Dark Riders were similarly despatched, with the Wolf Riders following up into my Shades.

Fortunately the Warlocks killed the Shaman, destroyed the bolt thrower crew and wounded the hero on Wyvern, winning the combat so they reformed to face the Wyvern and rider…

And this was all in the first turn !

Some new items For Sale

Having sold some Orcs this month I now need to shift some more, so the For Sale page has been updated.

One of the local buzzards popped in yesterday, using the gate post, which is right outside my study window (sad it flew off before I could photo it), and today using the garden fence at the back, which I did manage to photo !

More sales of Orcs and Ogres in the next week, pre-slotta to modern plastics.

WHFB: 2014 02 01 Battle – Empire & Dwarves vs Orcs & Dark Elves – Part 2

We took a break at 7pm to get the takeaway curry in (thanks Gav !).

Whilst Gav was out, I manned his bolt throwers and ironically rolled more casualties in that turn than he had in the game. Mind you…

RXB unit hold the Hippygriffs for another round ! Before succumbing…
The Dwarf miners also were a threat.

The Dark Riders and Warlocks are loose in the back behind the Empire line and bearing down on the Dwarves.
Meanwhile the surviving hippygriffs turned round and massacred the Shades. The Dwarf Miners then moved in to chew up the Orc bolt thrower crews.

The Dark Riders take on the White Wolves. This was going to be a defeat for me, but the Dark Riders had nothing else to do other than tie up a big unit of Empire Cavalry for another round and inflict a couple of casualties. Inevitably, they were defeated and ran off the board…

Harboth’s Black Mountain Boys, joined by the Shaman on Wyvern hold the line against the Reiksguard and second unit of Hippygriffs, to be joined with a flank attack by the CoK unit ! The CoK destroyed the hippygriff unit but were left in limbo, so did an abrupt about turn to face the White Wolves.

CoK vs White Wolves.

The White Wolves blink and go the other way.

The Harpies take on the Grudge Thrower, they are eventually driven off but silence the machine for a couple of rounds.

The Empire Wizard causes a calamitous detonation wiping out 17 Hammerers, just as the CoK unit appear before them….

The game finished just before 9pm. We agreed it was a draw. The Empire and Orc armies had wiped each other out, leaving the Dwarves and Dark Elves on the table. Neither of these were in a winning position. A good time was had by all.

WHFB: Xmashammer 2013 – 3 – Day Two

Byakhee Roo, couldn’t make the second day so I stepped in the hustle his remaining beastmen toward the stunties.

The beastmen were jumbled up and constrained in a narrow space. This proved rather important as rather than hitting the enemy with all the units all at the same time, they were fed in piecemeal.

In the middle of the field, the two main Orc regiments were engaged in combat with the stunties.

But their flank was crumbling.

Yup, nearly 40 Rangererers in your face !

The dwarves saw off the orc General, and killed all but the Ogre champion who was locked in a challenge…for the next two turns…holding up the entire unit !

Having defeated Harboth’s, the Dwarf general and his Hammererersers surged forward.

We opted to give the Orcs an additional 500 points of troops (Fyrd, Night Goblins and a stone thrower), and 1000 points to the Dwarves as a stand alone Slayer army from the Storm of Chaos book.

The Black Orcs held out though.

Chaos Trolls waded into the Long Drong Pirate Slayers.

The Dwarf Miners having defeated and run down the Gor Ambushers, then got attached by the Centigors who had finally destroyed the Gyrocopter.

The Chaos Hounds attacked the organ gun, whose crew fought them off !

The Giant pinned the pirate slayers with a flank attack, allowing the Minotaurs to steam in once the Chaos Trolls had been defeated.

The Night Goblins released their fanatics into the Dwarf Longbeards with predictable results, before the Ogre champion finally succumbed.

But the Night Goblins were wiped out by the Hammerers.

At the end of the game (c6pm Sunday) the Dwarves had won. The Beastmen had been constrained due to the scenery and couldn’t get in fast enough, but when they did were very effective. This left the Orcs to take the brunt of the attack. The Gyrocopters caused havoc on the flanks and weren’t picked off quickly enough.

Another enjoyable game !

As oveerseen by the feline controller….

WHFB: Xmashammer 2013 – 2 – The First Day

Initial set ups:

Evil !

T’other end…

Stunty !

Two units of Dwarf Rangers then deployed – one was 40 strong !

The Savage Orcs and Wolf Riders, facing 40 XB armed Dwarf Rangers charge into combat, but bounce off leaving just the Orc Hero to slow down this flank. This leaves 2 Bolt Throwers and 20 arrer boyz in defence. This flank held much longer than expected despite a gyrocopter swooping in.

Flank moves

The Beastmen’s main units get cobbled up and congested behind the scenery. This has a major effect on the rest of the game.

Beastmen ambush the DWarves, to no avail and are quickly driven off.

The Chaos Ogres adided by the Orc General on Wyvern charge into a Dwarven horde.

Some Gors catch 24 Long Drong’s Slayer Pirtates in the flank, but didn’t last long…

The Gyropcopters on the flank mess things up.

Head to head in the centre of the table.

Crunch !

Ambushers turn up

Trolls vs Trolls Slayers – at long last.

Centigors get stuck in to a Gyrocopter.

The centre of the board veers back and forth !

WHFB: Throw it on the table II

So continuing the game, I dealt with the Wolf Riders which allowed a unit of 30 Spearmen to move towards the Orcs on my right hand flank.

They would have the support of the Dark Riders and a mounted Sorceress.

The Corsairs got a narrow escape from the Empire steam tank, as both they and the tank steamed into the centre of the battlefield.

Hmm, now where do I place this mighty large template over this mighty large unit of Black Orcs ?

The left flank got wiped out by a unit of demi-gryph knights – 10 RXBs, and as you can see the hapless RBT crew.

Back on my right flank, the spearmen and Dark Riders clashed with another unit of demi-gryph knights…these guys are surprisingly tough as they come packing a lot of armour.

In the centre of the table, the Black Orcs (Eeza Ugezod’s) pushed forward and were met with the new Cauldron of Blood and new swordsmen. The Black Orcs won as they were simply better and outnumbered the swordsmen thus breaking my centre.

On my right flank things went better, seeing off the demi-gryph knights.

Overall it was not good.

Bolt throwers had killed my Dreadlord atop the Manticore, but that didn’t stop the Manticore, who swooped in to deal with a unit of Orc arrer boyz, but didn’t kill them all, and due to the Orc General’s presence behind them didn’t even make them break !
(NB: note the difference in size…the Orc General is mounted on the 1984 Tony Ackland Manticore…such is scale creep!)

And ironically, the sole remaining Orc was painted by me as a present to Gav !

Executioners, execute the Orc bolt thrower crew having come off worse in shooting and magic rounds.

But the centre cannot hold…

The Black Guard shore up the left flank seeing off the second unit of demi-gryphs.

But even having turned the right flank, shored up the left, there was no way I had to break the centre held by the Black Orcs and the massed Empire ranks.

Foiled again !

WHFB: 2013 08 19 Dark Elves vs Orcs

Another game of WHFB on Sunday !

Byakhee Gav A and I had a game – 3,200 points each:

We both refused a flank !

Resulting in an almost diagonal battle.

My army remained almost the same from Saturday, and my tactics similarly.
The battlefield had received some feline love, but was mostly unchanged since Rich had laid it out on Saturday. Gav had not been able to prepare his army list beforehand so made it up when he arrived (I have his army on a spreadsheet as he is limited by his actual possessions).

His first move was to charge his wolf riders into my RXB unit, which ran away and was wiped out. His follow up move towards the cauldron of blood was less successful. Whilst he took a gamble and charged the Cold One Chariot that he defeated which ran away before rallying and defeating the wolf riders.

In the meantime my centre moved forward to engage the two huge (40 each) columns of Orcs. And failed their charge rolls twice.Yes, out of SIX charge attempts FIVE FAILED.

They eventually got in…(third round lucky)…

This left the Shades attacking, defeating and running down the Savage Orcs that were protecting the massed ranks of bolt throwers. Having done this, Gav tried zapping the remaining Shades (5) with magic and four bolt throwers, and not killing them. They closed in and the Shades wiped out all but two bolt throwers.

In the centre. the Corsairs, charged into combat alone and whilst casing damage were wiped out, before the Silver Talons moved in and finished the job off. Again Samartik’s combination of armour and magic items proved succesful.

The Cold One Knights finally managed to motivate their mounts and trashed the Black Orcs even though they (the Black Orcs) charged, whilst the Dark Riders and Cold One Chariot ground down the Orc General over several rounds.

A victory for the Dark Elves, but not an overwhelming one, and the dice let me down repeatedly as Gav noticed.

And I am now heartedly sick of Pizzas !

Luckily for me, the local Indian take away had a broken credit/debit card reader yesterday evening, so after all my cards were refused (as were three other peoples’ cards), they let us take home our orders for free !
BARGAIN.

WHFB: Dark Elves vs Orcs

Byakhee Gav A and I had a short notice WHFB game today – I used last w/e’s army list due to the short notice and also to test out whether I’d won by sheer blind luck or whether there was some merit in the army list. 3k of PV per side.

Again the so – called horde army deployed completely before I did. I suspect it is because they are using huge blocks of infantry 30-40 strong whereas I have several smaller units. However, and for the first time Gav was using a Giant which I had not anticipated due to his long standing (30 years) antipathy to them, and was not using a single warmachine…again something in common with Jim’s army of the previous Saturday thus potentially rendering my 20 harpies a waste of 220 points…

I deployed my secret weapon – Cat !
Clawed was very nervous and edgy around humans when I rescued him (a stray) so I think it is good he is now confident enough to sit on most of my large, insanitary and noisy byakhees without fear.

The Harpies and the Dark Riders charged into the Orc Wolf Riders, and a terrible grinding combat ensued.

Use it or Lose it ! The first War Hydra surged forward, the Sorceresses did their work and hexed Eeza Ugezod’s Black Orcs (40 strong horde of Black Orcs), reducing their WS and BS to 1, and reducing the S & T by 1. For good measure I took a few out with Blade Wind and some RXB shots. Then I used the War Hydra’s breath weapon (Use it or Lose it). They charged into combat against the Hydra and it got very messy…for them…

Meanwhile, twinkletoes the giant and COK danced around each other to no effect.

Gav managed to roll some lousy Animosity tests that left harboth’s 40 Boyz standing around at the back allowing the second War Hydra and the Silver Talons to march up close.

No, they were still locked in combat, after three rounds ! Orc Wolf Riders, DE Dark Riders and Harpies ground each other down.

The War Hydra defeated the Black orcs and over-ran them. The Spearmen charged the Orc General on Wyvern saw him off, only to ind he returned for more and beat them !

Meanwhile the Dark Riders finally broke the Wolf Riders and rode them down freeing up my flank.

However, Harboth’s having charged the second War Hydra and received a sever mauling got the Silver Talons in the face as well, and were soundly defeated, the Harpies killed the Orc Shaman, leaving the Giant out of the action and just an Orc General surrounded on three sides by a pretty much unharmed Dark Elf army.

I counted about: 4 Harpies dead; 5 Dark Riders; 3 Silver Talons (Spearmen); 12 Spearmen; 2 RXBs; and one War Hydra at half wounds. In return I’d killed: 40 Black Orcs; 40 Big ‘Uns; 20 Savage Orcs; 10 Wolf Riders; a Lvl 4 Shaman; and an Orc General missing half his wounds.

So the same army did another decisive victory. Luck ?

Not with those dice !
True Gav’s Animosity rolls had hampered him, but his plans and deployment were sound.
I think I might have a half decent army list here.
Well until next time. 😉

Louis, fired off a load more pictures available here.

My mate Mort also turned up to collect his Cossacks, and drool at the train, he was impressed by the scene of carnage !
