FG Perilous Dark Bestiary 1

First set of figures painted.

Ballista II, a large construct with a powerful ballista. Pinned by Richard as the arm would just be a liability simply glued on. Dark silver, dry brushed bright rung fang, and then toned down with black and brown washes that also helped key in the wooden parts of the ballista.

Vapour Snakes. Arctic grey, dry brushed with white and then highlighted with rune fang silver again – I was rummaging around the paint collection and found a lot of pots of rune fang silver so will be using it extensively !

Lockdown Foamboard Fun (3)

Now the carcass is clad in balsa wood, time for some paint.

In particular, textured masonry paint. Makes the foam board and all else feel like concrete which is great for transport.

Importantly, it also means that the foam is covered up, as when you come to spray it, the sprays will melt the foam if it is unprotected. So make sure all the edges are covered with paint before spraying.

It also covers up a host of imperfections and nooks and crannies.

Like so.

So after a couple of hours drying time for some…

BLACK

Paint the underside of the card base, so that it does not warp.

Spray paint the rest…BLACK…

Now for some block painting.

That’s as far as the paint drying got me today (and light permitting).

Tomorrow, the final touches, of highlights, and some paving.

Lockdown Foamboard Fun (2)

So, the foambaord carcass of the building is made, now for some good hard planking.

Balsa wood for the exterior beams, a bit thicker than I normally use, but given the lock down all I have.

Use the general architecture to guide you as to where the beams would go.

I also shape them slightly by shaving off random bits along the edges to make it look a bit more natural.

Now for the interior. The wooden planks for the first and second floors.

I often measure out the lengths and then snap them off of the main length of balsa so In end up with frayed wooden pieces which look much more natural than sawn off pieces.

I also try and ensure I have some shorter floorboards to make it look more natural (top right).

Again I shave off some off the straight edges which will be picked up when I paint the edifice.

Next up, watching paint dry !

Wow bet you’re excited.

NB: This is being done real time, so it does take a few days to do…

FGGA: Up before the Beak

Another model that is quick to do, well after its been pinned. The model is made of resin, and obviously is top heavy so Richard pinned the tree trunk properly.

One Razorbeak.

Foundry granite for body and wings, using the Light to dry brush the wings. Then a coat of Citadel Reikland Flesh, which was too subdued, so I used a wash of Carrowburg Crimson.

I’d used Foundry Bay Brown and Granite for the tree limb too, so to make it stand out from the Razorbesak itself I gave it a wash of Citadel Bierl-tan to represent the lichen, moss and algae.

Stairways to Heaven (and more)

As used in the Walenton Manor scenario, here are the stairways used.

They are by Blotz.

MDF, easy to put together and cheap.

I have done stairways using balsa but these seemed an easy option.

Painted the usual grey, weathered with brown and green to represent dirty footprints, and then highlighted light grey at the edges for definition.

I hadn’t got round to the highlights in time for the Walenton Manor game.

Candles on stands, from the Mantic Wizard’s library set.

A pile of treasure chests and scrolls, again by Mantic.

And finally, a very long awaited finished version ion the Northstar Lectern.

And yet another double;e height bookcase…two Mantic bookcases glued together. That’ll make a good place to put a treasure and make adventurers climb for their loot !

Crabby Wizard with Gold

Another re-based and touched up C02 Wizard that I did back in Uni.

Just touched up the red and the flesh, should make a good apprentice for the previous wizard I painted up in red with a bald head.

A pile of gold – wizard for size comparison.

This is one of the Mantic terrain items so you can see the size of them. Paints up easily. Obvious scenario marker/objective, probably spend a round filling your pockets and get out !

And finally, the second giant crab man.

A bit more articulate !

The Library is started

As shown in my previous posting, I have acquired a lot of new terrain items and so made a start on the first lot. I had deliberately bought a load of Library sets from the Mantic kickstarter so that I could do justice to The Library scenario in the Frostgrave rule book.

Two book cases. They are about 5cm or 2″ wide.

Cabinet, small book case and corner case.

Two issues will be:-
(a) painting the books to provide some colour
(b) buying enough bay brown paint, or other suitable pine coloured paint !

Because I have a lot of this stuff to paint, and then there’s the variants in the Wizard’s study set as well.

Dungeon Furniture

A slow week painting wise, due to Village Hall and Council work, including a training course yesterday.

But I did get done a second order from Midlam Miniatures.

Doorways – two on the left one side of the piece, two on the right the other side.

I also did four more arches but you’ve seen them already.

Statues with braziers.

the flames are a bit underwhelming, and of course the paint job is the inverse of what real; flames look like, but that is artistic licence for you.

Scrying ball, and cauldron.

trapdoors.

Now I need to finish off the thieves who will be opening them to find the treasure !

Baygar and the Beggar

Another couple of golden oldies.

Baygar from the C02 Wizards range. Often mistaken for the Agyar Mistletaine model, of which it is an obvious variant.

This one I painted back at uni some 25 years ago, and the basing just isn’t up to scratch. There were also a few knocks chipping off the paint.

So I tidied up the chipped paintwork, and re-based him. Obviously you can tell. 😉

FSS 11 hunchback beggar on crutch – must have got this as part of a job lot a few years ago on Evil-Bay.

The old beggar Jon Priceless always in need of Lead Cross parcels. He claims to have had two daughters and a wife, but lost everything on the roll of a d20 in a gaming session….

No known gaming use but one ion those nostalgic pieces that just cry out to be painted

Its a study in sludgy browns. The hood is Bay brown, the cloak Quagmire, the trousers Tan, the stick Spearshaft. All Foundry paints.

Red Faced Thug and a Thief (Updated)

Caught red faced ?

The first of two pre-slotta C04 Thieves finished today. he looks somewhat red faced, despite using Foundry Expert Flesh D, might have to have another go at photographing him, and the club needs straightening.

UPDATE: Slightly less red fced, and with a straight club !

The second pre-lsotta thief painted in exactly the same way and photographed at the same time, but not red faced. Duh ?

Both useful minions for Mordheim and Frostgrave.

Nice and simple to paint and lovely sculpts despite being from ~1983.
