As well as being an excellent film, amongst my collection and pinned in the last year by Richard are a couple of the very old (1983) Jabberwockies Citadel did.

One of the first White Dwarfs I got had a painted example in, so I used that as a template:-

Things have moved on a bit.

There were two variants:

Reviewing my collection I decided to ditch the very old skeletons I’d painted up some 25 years ago for WHFB as they were on square bases, with old style flock.

This meant I had to find some replacements. Some would come from the Cultist plastic frame, but I was all set to go get some of the Mantic steles when…having to clear out more stuff so I could get my car into my parents’ garage, I found some very old Citadel skeletons.

from the original plastic kits from the late 1980’s.

Came up a treat, so just need a few more, and then some armoured ones and I’m done.

I also found some piles of bones and skulls, that i quickly knocked up and put onto bases as objectives/event markers.

Beware the Werewolf !

After last Saturday’s game my braincell remembered I had a primed and based Werewolf ready to paint, so overcoming many hardships this week, I did just that.

Give us a hug !

I tried to paint its pelt with a darker stripe of near black down the back, and a lighter underbelly, as normal wolves have.

In Frostgrave, beheading a Werewolf and selling the head can gain money, fame and XP…so the model from Northstar comes with a separate head piece which I then mounted on a flat 25mm base as per the usual treasure.

Not sure on the blood effect but it looks ok from a distance.

Ulterior Motives – Archway

One of the two missing items from the Ulterior Motives scenery set that I posted yesterday.

An archway, simple enough. Obviously I had two of them. As it is plain on one side, I decided to put them back to back to make a proper item.

Then my brain cell had a thought to make it into a bit more of an interesting item. I decided to add some transparent plastic with a “gate” effect on it.

Cut from a blister pack, one piece added to the back of each archway piece, with stupid glue.

To sandwich another piece of plastic with metallic blue and silver paint to represent (poorly) the gateway to another location or world…

Added to a base, and with greenstuff to mask the gap between the two scenery pieces. Looks a lot better than a single sided stand alone piece. I think.

Red Herrings – Ulterior Motives scenery +1, -2

I bought the Ulterior Motives scenery on the Nickstarter, and got two sets which is just as well as you can end up requiring two pieces of each scenery type depending on what cards are drawn by the players.

Two statues – nice to have.
Two magic circles – nice to have and I haven’t got any others as yet. I have just about manage to dry brush the dark grey and black respectively to avoid over brushing the gold symbols.

These were done in a hurry for Saturday gone, in case we needed them – we did but they played little part ion the game.

Pits and trapdoors. Easily fabricated from scratch but they came with the set and are nice pieces easily painted up so iff you are short of time why not ?

Standing stones and sarcophagus.

I managed to get the runes right on one of the standing stones but failed on the sarcophagus.

Again nice times, can be replicated elsewhere but for the price on the Nickstarter, they were worth it.

The standing stone did get used in our game on Saturday YAY !

Both items are generic enough to be used in any number of different games as general scenery.

Finally, the +1 and -2:

A small piece of scenery that has been knocking around for a long time.

I think it is a piece from a Grenadier Red Dragon set.

Anyway, with a nice big red jewel it makes for a nice scenery piece and objective for Frostgrave/Mordheim.

The attentive Frostgrave fans will note the Zombie and Archway from the Ulterior Motives scenery set are missing.

they’re to follow as I have done some kit bashing with the first, and used the second as an excuse to paint more stuff !

FG: The Keep & Ulterior Motives (Part Three)

With KIY now wounded and a rapidly dwindling band of followers a full out withdrawal was underway.

By the time some combats had happened and some shooting,I’d lost the marksman, two archers and the last thug.

Rinsesoap (Alan) now invoked his secret Ulterior Motice, and the whole board was plunged into darkness restricting shooting to 12″.

Rinsesoap also headed for the standing stone.

And imps don’t last long in combat against Wizards.

But they do too better against skeletons.

Whilst Klotilda had got off the board, KIYlimping badly had been slower, and ended up with another skeleton popping up in front of him.

But he wasn’t the only one trying to get away, and in the case of Miss Mazing’s Captain falling to a well aimed shot by Rinsesoap’s archer.

KIY and his last minion fought off the skeleton, before making good their escape.

Leaving the Captain hacking apart a zombie summoned by Rinsesoap, who had fondled the standing stone and was last seen heading for safety with a glowing vial !

We called it a day there after a marathon session of about 3.5 hours playing one game.

After the game we reflected on the Ulterior Motives cards.

They had made a difference, distracting each of us at various points in time.

I also felt that we had not explored the terrain pieces, either because we were too busy, or we had not properly considered them as potential sources of loot, XP and the like. A case of learning to whistle and walk !

I suspect as we use the cards more, we will become more inquisitive having seen events happen before.

FG: The Keep & Ulterior Motives (Part Two)

KIY was out in the open-end the Werewolf stalked towards him, straight on to the magical circle and *blink* was gone elsewhere…

…and re-appeared on the other side of the table right in front of Miss Mazing’s war band who were hunting it !

Seizing this opportunity KIY retreated behind cover, summoning a demon to block the narrow passageway in front of him whilst the Captain guarded the rear.

Meanwhile, the wounded thing dragged the treasure away supported by the archer, and the werewolf got mobbed by MissMazing’s minions who had followed the werewolf onto the magic circle with two of the three arriving in the same location.

The third hapless victim had been left on their own, resulting in being mobbed by Rinsesoap’s forces, and being brutally cut down.

Similarly the werewolf was cut down by the Captain of Miss Mazing’s band, who removed the head.

And KIY’s demon went down as well to Rinsesoap’s efforts.

Followed by the Barbarian being cut down by KIY’s Captain who moved up to replace the demon.

Dr Archer the Apothecary was the next to bite the dust in a vain bid to reach the treasure in the centre of the table. KIY decided it was time to get out with what loot the war band had.

Easier said than done, as Rinsesoap’s forces were hot on my heels.

But not before my Marksman put a bolt into Rinseopa’s apprentice !

But as people picked up the last treasure, creatures were brought forward…and mostly appeared behind my escape route.
