Mordheim: The best laid plans of Men and Marienburgers (Updated)

Having planned to do a new post on Monday evening of the Mordheim games we’d played on Saturday, the feline Criminal Mastermind known as BlackJack decided to sit on my lap for the first time – a real p[roper “I’m sitting on your lap”…after 3 years he has never done this before often sitting beside me or partially on my lap. So I didn’t turf him off and do this posting.

Anyhow, here is the table on Saturday:

I made sure to use the newly restored terrain, which simply pointed out all the faults woith the other stuff !

The first scenario was “Defend the find”, and Byakhee Anthony sensibly chose the best and most easily defended of the three buildings in the centre of the board – the raised townhouse/market hall. And plonked 7 stunties in there armed with pistols, and a couple were troll slayers.

My gaudily clad Marienburgers circled for position whilst the archers sniped at the Dwarves with little success apart from a critical on the first turn. Then they tried rushing the stunties.

So the Youngblood fought his way up the stairs, kicked off the Beardling but then came a cropper with a troll slayer in the doorway. The champions attempted a co-ordinated climb into the building which also failed. In the end I botled it !

Next game: Breakthrough !

I’d hired a Warlock (Agyar Mistletaine – the original figure I’d painted at Uni some 20+ years ago and NEVER fielded). My Marienburgers had to get two figures off of the other side of the table, and Anthony’s Blackbeard Pirates had to stop them.

At least the Marienburgers stand out amongst the otherwise drab ruins ! 🙂

Agyar, a champion and a swordsman charged into try and win the “staircase building”, but came off rather badly.

Out in the street, my leader Claes Von Geld, lead a rush to the other side but were slowed down by the stunties who counter charged.

Two others managed to get within striking distance of the other side of the board, but Agyar did a runner, and I failed the bottle test as a result which even Anthony agreed was an unlucky dice roll.

So two losses…two to go…

BoB: Fences & Hedges

For my Back of Beyond games, I need a few more feet (!) of hedges and fences. From contemporary photos varioys fencing styles were used throughout Russia, and the simple wattle fences seemed common enough. So I bought last year a load of the Renedra fencing.

The individual sections are about five inches long, so a couple of them maker a useful length of fencing (a subject I will come back to WRT another manufacturer’s product), or approximately a foot. Now carving up the thick artists’ mounting card or greyboard using only a foot long steel rule as a guide for the kinife resulted in wibbly wobbly base sections.

So, having WRITTEN A SHOPPING LIST early in the new year of various materials I needed, I ended up in an arts/hobby shop, and found this – a steel ruler for cutting things that was/is just over a metre long. £23 but worth it.

Needing to do tens of feet/several metres worth of fencing and hedges for both BoB and AVBCW this is ideal for churning out standard width scenery pieces.

With a THICK layer of paper underneath I carved up metre sections of card only an inch wide easily with disposable knioves from B&Q.

Withe the fencing being bulked out with some Woodland Sceneics clump foliage I did some 13 foots worth of fencing/hedging for BoB in only a few days.

Nopt exciting stuff, but very much needed for the next Big Game scheduled on the 21st February !

Taxes, Funding and Books

Been a bit quiet the last fortnight here. I’ve been a bit busy !

The latest Order Of the Stick book arrived, which took a day to read through, some nice new additions making it a hefty volume.

That was a pleasant change from setting our Council Tax Precept (in the absence of our chairman), filing my own tax return, and securing funding for our local community shop project – all bone dry subjects.

I have however, been doing some more scenery (more of which to follow), and starting the project to paint some 80 Bolshevik and Chinese Cavalry, plus a BUF version of the Quadricycle of Death. Oh, and a Mordheim session yesterday which will aslo be up shortly.
