Paint Log 2012

In order to remind myself how much I have done and taking a leaf out of Roughage’s blog, I have been keeping a log (spreadsheet) of all my painting (sad git).
Last year I painted the equivalent of more than 900 figures which is pretty good going. Since I started the log (2010), I have painted 2200 figures:

I am doing this to keep myself motivated and remind myself just how much I have done, as I grind my way through the endless unpainted, unassembled desolation that the Playroom seems to hold in a TARDIS like style.
So when I commented about the Lustrian scenery, I remembered that I had a terrain piece by that company featuring The Hounds of Tindalos. So that is one of today’s easy wins for painting – hopefully photographed shortly.
In rummaging to find that, I came across another piece of scenery I dimly remember buying, and now needs some attention, for quite what purpose I have no idea but it’ll come to me in time and should be an easy paint, after I’ve watched some more DVDs to remind me of colour schemes. 😉
The current hiatus on AVBCW is due to me having an artistic block on the BUF Cavalry, the diea of painting more black, and more horses both at the same time has really dented my enthusiasm to paint them. Maybe after my current WHFB binge over the w/e I’ll get back to them.
NB: Not all my painting gets a posting – sometimes the latest batch of 10 DE Spearmen aren’t worth it.
Inevitable question – how are you counting “figure equivalents” for things like scenery and tanks and chariots?
This depends on the complexity and labour put into a model:
An ordinary 28 or 15mm infantry grunt is 1. Everything else is measured against the time and effort taken to paint a single figure.
A standard bearer is 2 (paint figure plus assemble and print/paint banner).
An ordinary champion, may be 2, more likely 1.
A Character or Hero is 2 – more fancy accoutrements to paint.
Cavalry are usually 2 – painting the steed, and then the rider.
A Cavalry standard bearer would therefore be 3 etc. An exception would be the DE Dark Rider standard which is minimal (fancy spear with severed heads).
A Chariot will probably be 5:
– 2 steeds to paint
– 2 crewmen to paint
-1 the rest of the chariot.
(Total = 5)
Similarly an HMG will be:
– 3 Crewmen
– 1 HMG
(Total = 4)
(NB: Some HMG models have 3 crewmen and a model, and include extra gubbins like ammo belts that need to be glued into place, but I’d still count them all as a 4)
A piece of scenery is very much a how long is a piece of string ?
I have two pieces completed today:
One is a large block with bas relief on three sides. probably only 3 points total including adding the base and scenery as it is not very detailed, just large.
The second is much bigger and more intricate (think skullz), so in itself is 5 points, even if I subsequently put it onto a base (which won’t have room for scenery).
A plain WHFB hill would be 2 max, simply due to size (and skullz).
Tanks – again very subjective. An FT17, I’d give as a 2 maybe 3. The Mark IV a 4 due to size and complexity.
To get a 5, you’re talking about Giants, Dragons, super heavy tanks, and detailed scratchbuilt scenery.
Or an altar of Khaine might be worth 6/7 (2 Witch Elves, a Death Hag [Hero], plus the altar itself which is a 5 piece item) all of which I place on a special scenic mdf base and carved foamboard.
So waving my hands in the air a bit, your Drakwald Greencoats would only be 1 a piece.
But the demi-gryph knights would probably be worth 3 a piece as they are:
– Cavalry (2 each)
– poncy cavalry requiring more painting (2+1=3).
Interesting, we started discussing a “Painting Points” system on WH-Empire, I need to finish it off and add up my progress, My estimate is about 1000 since 2010, but I suspect that will be revised upwards.
